"אשקלון היא עיר תיירות המתאימה בהחלט לארח תיירים מאוקראינה או מרוסיה." אמר שר התיירות  סטס מיסז'ניקוב, בביקורו בביתן  אשקלון, ביריד הבינלאומי לתיירות, שהתקיים באחרונה, ב"גני התערוכה" בתל אביב. דברי שר התיירות באו כתשובה לשאלת נציגי  אשקלון, בעקבות ההתארגנות החדשה של גורמי תיירות  באשקלון, לקראת עידן של ביטול הוויזות של תיירים הבאים מאוקראינה ורוסיה

סקר שנערך עבור משרד התיירות לאחר קמפיין דצמבר-ינואר, מצא כי: כשני שלישים (65%) מהתיירים מרוסיה, מעוניינים בחופשה בישראל. החודש הגיעו מרוסיה 27,000 תיירים. בחודש הבא יחל קמפיין האביב של משרד התיירות ברוסיה בעלות של 9 מיליון שקלים
